Fresh food diets provide these benefits over commercial pet food diets because they are not subjected to high heat processing and do not contain artificial colorings, preservatives, synthetic vitamins and fillers that are found, to some degree, in all commercial pet foods today (even those claiming to be organic). Nearly all canned and kibble foods claim to meet the AAFCO’s nutrition profile for dogs or cats; however they are only able to do this by adding what essentially amounts to a multi-vitamin.
The beginning of the ingredient list may appear nutritious but beware of the long list of supplements towards the end, as the number of supplements added to any food is a good indicator of the amount of processing the food has been subjected to. Just remember that supplements may be beneficial as an enhancement to a quality balanced diet but they were never intended to replace real foods.
Most of the commercial foods available today contain questionable meat & by-product sources (many of them not from meat suitable for human consumption – a worrying thought). They also contain cheap grain fillers, which are common allergens, as a means to bulk up their meals.
